Teen DBT Treatment Program
Each of our treatment programs provides teens with access to DBT and other evidence-based mental health therapies such as CBT. Teens can participate in DBT on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, depending on their level of care. We incorporate some of the following key elements into our DBT sessions for teens:
- Targeted Interventions for Emotional Regulation: Teaches teens practical skills to manage intense emotions and mood swings.
- Mindfulness Training: Help teens develop self-awareness and stay present, reducing impulsive behaviors, overreactions, and anxiety.
- Distress Management: Helps develop positive coping skills to manage stress and navigate crises without resorting to substance abuse or self-harm.
- Improved Relationship and Communication Skills: DBT emphasizes the development of communication and active listening skills to enhance family, friend, peer, and social interactions.
- Adapted to Unique Needs of Teens: DBT is a structured yet flexible program that can be tailored to the individual recovery needs of your teen. It can treat a variety of mental health problems, addictions, and be offered in a variety of settings, including individual therapy, support groups, and family or home-based therapies.
- Proven Results: DBT is an evidence-based therapy with peer-reviewed evidence and clinical validation to back up its effectiveness in reducing self-harm, suicidal ideation, and risky behaviors such as substance abuse in teens.
- Long-Term Recovery and Relapse Prevention: DBT empowers teens with lifelong skills for emotional balance, resilience, improved self-esteem, and healthy decision-making. This increases the chances of sustained recovery and reduces the risk of relapse.

What is DBT Therapy?
Dialectical Behavior Therapy is an evidence-based mental health treatment initially designed for Borderline Personality Disorder and complex trauma. However, it also has shown effective results for treating substance abuse and other mental health disorders in teens.
DBT addresses core challenges many teens face, such as intense emotional dysregulation, impulse control problems, self-harm, and identity exploration. Research shows that DBT for Adolescents (DBT-A) significantly reduces suicidal ideation, self-harm, and risky or harmful behaviors. DBT combines acceptance and change strategies to promote emotional growth and healing, rather than just managing symptoms. DBT is highly adaptable and can be effectively incorporated into family treatment sessions, recognizing that a supportive home environment is essential for sustained recovery.
DBT focuses on improving emotional well-being, teaching teens how to positively cope with negative emotions to lower the risk of relapse. During sessions, a qualified therapist collaborates with the teen to build four key skill sets: distress tolerance, emotional regulation, mindfulness, and improving interpersonal effectiveness.

In our residential and partial hospitalization program, teens participate in therapy sessions with a qualified therapist. This intense course of treatment can help teens with co-occurring mental health disorders see an improvement in symptoms in four to six weeks.
Evidence-Based
Dialectical behavior therapy is an evidence-based approach with extensive research to support its validity. It is recognized by the American Psychological Association as a first-line approach to treatment for borderline personality disorder (BPD) and complex trauma.

Improve Emotional Health
DBT focuses closely on emotional regulation and increasing one’s tolerance for distress. Teens also develop mindfulness skills, becoming more aware of how their emotions affect their mood, behavior, and physical sensations.
Strengthen Relationships
DBT emphasizes the importance of connection and a support system. A key part of DBT is developing interpersonal effectiveness skills, such as effective communication, active listening, and trust. These can help teens in substance abuse recovery rebuild and manage turbulent relationships.

Relapse Prevention
Attending regular therapy sessions even after finishing a residential treatment program is essential for teens in long-term recovery. DBT is a valuable tool for preventing relapse in teens as they transition home.

Frequently Asked Questions
About DBT for Teens
Do you provide a mental health assessment?
When your teen first arrives for treatment, whether it be inpatient or intensive outpatient, we conduct a substance abuse assessment and mental health evaluation. Part of this includes reviewing their psychiatric history to understand their mental health diagnosis and what treatments they have tried in the past.
How often does my teen attend DBT sessions?
Depending on their level of care, teens may attend DBT sessions weekly, or bi-weekly.
Can my teen receive medication during DBT treatment?
Yes. While therapists do not prescribe medication, many teens attend DBT while also participating in medication appointments with a licensed psychiatric provider. A combination of medication and therapy is shown to have highly successful treatment outcomes for teens in recovery.
Does insurance cover DBT?
Yes, we accept most major insurance providers, including Cigna, Aetna, BlueCross Blue Shield, United Healthcare, Lucet, Optum, Tricare, Humana, and Bright Healthcare. Speak with one of our admissions members to verify insurance and find the best treatment plan for your teen.
