What Is Neurotypical?
The term "neurotypical" is often used on social media among teens and young adults to highlight differences in how people think and behave. They especially compare themselves to those who identify as “neurodivergent”, such as individuals with autism, ADHD, or other neurological differences.
Neurotypical is used to describe people whose brain development meets typical milestones and functioning aligns with what is considered normal or standard in the culture. It is an informal, nonmedical term, though it has been regularly used in discussions in the autism community since the 1990s to describe structural, functional, and sensory differences in the brain [1].
The term is increasingly used to refer to those without conditions like ADHD or autism, who “process the world normally”. For neurotypical teens and their parents, this often translates into fewer challenges with everyday routines and social norms, as their brains function in ways that align with what schools, families, and communities typically expect.
What Is Neurodivergence?
Neurodivergence in teens refers to differences in brain functioning that impact how they think, learn, process information, and behave, compared to the neurotypical population. It is not a formal medical diagnosis but rather an umbrella term used in educational and community contexts to describe diverse neurological profiles [2][3].
Common neurodivergent conditions include autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, and other neurological differences. About 1 in 31 children are diagnosed with autism, and around 11% of children and teens are diagnosed with ADHD in the U.S. [4].
Neurodivergence also includes other conditions such as dysgraphia and sensory processing disorder. Neurodivergent teens often face unique challenges such as sensory sensitivities, difficulties with executive functioning (organization, planning), social interactions (e.g, avoiding eye contact or experiencing social anxiety), and difficulty regulating their emotions (e.g, aggressive outbursts).
Common Neurodivergent Diagnoses in Teens
There are several conditions diagnosed in teens that fall under the “neurodivergent” umbrella. These include [5][6]:
- ADHD: Characterized by impulsive behaviors, inability to focus, inattention, and hyperactivity. Teens often struggle to regulate their emotions and time management, requiring increased academic support and often medication.
- Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): Differences in sensory processing, social communication, and repetitive behaviors. Some autistic teens are highly functional and verbal, while others may struggle to communicate or perform basic tasks on their own.
- Dyslexia: A learning disability that affects the ability to read, spell, and write. Despite their intelligence, dyslexic teens may avoid reading due to frustration.
- Dyspraxia: Affects motor skills, making activities like sports, recreation, and even handwriting or cooking challenging. Teens with dyspraxia may be clumsy or struggle to be aware of their surroundings.
- Sensory Processing Disorder: This either increases or decreases typical responses to sensory stimuli. Teens may be overwhelmed by loud noises or smells from certain foods or environments.
How Do Neurodivergent Teens Process and Interact with the World Differently?
If your teen is neurodivergent, they have some unique behaviors or ways of interacting with the world. Below are some common traits of neurodivergent teens that highlight how they interact with the world differently than neurotypical peers.
Sensory processing: Your teen might find the TV being too loud or the sound of a school bell deafening, reacting as if it were a scream. This is because their brain often processes sensory input more intensely (or in some cases not at all).
Emotional regulation: Your teen may struggle with intense emotional reactions that go above and beyond classic teenage mood swings or meltdowns. This can almost resemble a toddler's temper tantrum and may be triggered if they feel overstimulated, such as during a noisy school event. If your teen struggles with this, communicate with adults in their life who can encourage them to step away to calm down their nervous system.
Social skills: Your teen might miss social cues like tone of voice or body language. They may misunderstand sarcasm, or come across as too honest or blunt, unable to “read the room”. This can make social interactions challenging, often leading to isolation or even bullying.
Executive functioning: Neurodivergent teens often struggle with organizing their homework or keeping track of assignments; they may need extra reminders or structured routines to manage schoolwork. This also applies to the home, where they may struggle with chores or even self-care/daily hygiene.
Movement and sensory stimulation: Some neurodivergent teens seek sensory input by fidgeting or rocking to help their brains focus.
